Jon’s really getting some great shots of the garden lately. Check out the elephant garlic flowers!

That thingy! The spindly one with the yellow flowers! (gorgeous pic, by the way) Are they broccoli raab? If so, how do you grow it, when do you harvest, what is it supposed to look like? I think we’ve planted some in our first community garden patch thinking it was broccoli. Not a gardener! Please give me any advise on what to do now.

And I love our CSA package each week! It is fun to experiment with things I’ve never tried!

thanks tammy! the one that looks closest to broccoli raab and has yellow flowers is probably the baby bok choi and tat soi that i let flower before i could pick it. but broccoli raab looks similar to and in some ways is easier to grow than broccoli (but instead of making a big broccoli crown, it makes smaller florettes). you just have to harvest it before it flowers; leaves, flower buds and all… you can plant it in the really early spring and harvest now, or plant it in the fall and harvest it in the spring. it’s not a good summer crop because it flowers fast. if it hasn’t started flowering by now, check it, because with this heat, it’s bound to happen fast…
