It’s the DIRTBOX season again!!!

March 10, 2010

Hello friends and family… and friends of friends… and future friends, We at the Dundee Dirtbox are gearing up for our second season of Community-Support Agriculture, and we want to take this mass email opportunity to get the word out and start signing up folks who are interested in being a part of the family this go-around.

If you are a repeat offender, you know the general drill, but we are making a few significant changes this year, offering a few more goodies and are tightening our procedures. All of the nitty-gritty details are outlined below, but first we want to talk a little about what community-supported agriculture means to us (so you have an idea of what you’re getting into!).

Too often the exchange and consumption of food is based on a “producer” and “consumer” model. This automatically presents the potential for an adversarial relationship, rather than a cooperative relationship. We want our members to enter into this relationship as informed “eaters” and not consumers. We want our members to consider our relationship as collaborative, and consider themselves as co-producers. Because when you step back and look at it, we really are in this together.

Last year we realized the immense value of having a community of people working together for a common good. Through the work of so many more than just the 2 of us, we created a community of friends who supported each other in the quest for good, healthy food. You, as a member of our community, “support” our agriculture. Your support, which comes in many different forms, is met in return with our bountiful harvest.

Unfortunately, this support system is not free of uncertainty and risk. Farming is risky. But uncertainty builds community, and we work very hard to build our community, and in the unlikely event that we encounter an issue, we know that we have your support. We embrace the uncertainty!

So with all that being said, we would like to present the details for this season of the Dundee Dirtbox…

The overview –

Each week throughout the season, for 24 weeks, we will provide each member (or household) with a bin full of delicious organic goodies, to be collected from a central pick-up location.

The box –

Each box will contain the vegetables, herbs and fruits (and sometimes flowers) that are ready to be harvested that week, along with some additional options, if the member so chooses to accept them. For example, this year we will be offering the option to include eggs from our hens and/or goat cheese from our friend’s farm (with seasonal herbs!). These options come at a small additional cost.

The pick-up –

Each week, boxes can be collected by members from one of 2 pick-up locations. If you are a Portlander, the pick-up location is a clothing boutique on Mississippi Avenue in North Portland. If you are down around Dundee, the pick-up location is our farm. Boxes will be available for pick up every Saturday, between 10:00am and 6:00pm.

The timeline –

We will deliver for 24 weeks, from the first week of June through the middle of November.

The cost – *

Base cost for each box: $20/week, or $480 for the season

Box with a dozen eggs: $25/week, or $600 for the season

Box with a weekly dose of goat cheese: $26/week, or $624 for the season

Box with a dozen eggs and a dose of goat cheese: $30/week, or $720 for the season

      * We feel that good food should be accessible to everyone. Talk to us about payment options.

So that’s the scoop. Let us know if you have any questions.

If you would like to join us this year, please let us know by April 15th, by filling out the form below and sending it back to us in an email. Shares are on a first-come, first-served basis. We will then follow up about payment details, based on your choices.
