The cold and rain is upon us…

October 12, 2009

I can safely say, after spending the large majority of my weekend outside, that is was darn COLD here! And looking at the forecast for the week, we’ve got pretty consistent coldness and rain for the foreseeable future. Sigh.

I guess that means that our incredibly gorgeous and invigorating summer and our lengthy, colorful fall is coming to a close. And that also means that our first season of operation at the Dundee Dirtbox is coming to a close. Sniffle.

Scratch that sniffle. What an absolutely beautiful and bountiful season we’ve had!! I look back on the past 6-7 months and I’m in awe of all that we have accomplished. And by “we”, I mean all of you! Jon showed me a picture the other day of what the space looked like before we even put a shovel in the ground… just a weedy meadow with a pile of burnt wood in the middle. Then compare that to what I was walking amongst yesterday, pulling lovely purple carrots from the ground, harvesting our big, fat watermelons, looking out at all the color in bloom… we did that! And we did it well!

Well, we did it well for the most part. We had our setbacks, and many of our plants went to plant heaven along the way, but I am so proud and so energized and so filled with admiration for what has been accomplished on this tiny little plot of land. Not just the visible garden we have created, but the intangible parts as well. The community, the friendships, the hard work, the ideas, the sweat, the harvest dinners, the dedication, the laughter (oh so much laughter)…

What it all comes down to is that Nadine & I want to thank you all. For allowing us to be the crazy farm ladies. For helping our dream transform from compacted, lifeless dirt to a thriving and productive spread of reality. As cliche as this statement is, we really, really couldn’t have done it without your support and shovel-rearing efforts.

So we are invigorated beyond limit. And we are determined to burst out next spring for yet another wildly successful season of dirtbox wonder. But stay tuned over the winter for updates on planning, brainstorming, random thoughts, silly pictures, etc. We can’t wait to do it all again…

Thank you. Times infinity.

You guys are awesome “farm ladies.” It’s been fun to watch the Dirtbox evolve, and I look forward to the next phase =)
