For all of you diggers.

September 21, 2009

Today I pulled out the cucumbers and started prepping the bed for some fall onions and garlic, and am VERY excited about this!  I wanted to share with all of you who struggled to double-dig the heavy Jory soils here in Dundee last spring…For as heavy and tight these soils were when we first broke ground, ONE SEASON’S worth of ammendments, compost, digging, plant roots, and gopher mining has transformed the beds into loose and crumbly, fluffy dark soil that is ideal for gardening!  When I turned the soil over, it was teeming with worms and castings, lots of aggregates and LOTS of dark humus. Seriously, I dream about soils like this. You did it! THIS is what this whole project is all about… adding life to soils that were compacted and lifeless, and creating an environment where we can grow food for ourselves. Be proud!

In this week’s share, you’ll find tomatoes (early girls, romas, brandywines), cherry tomatoes with various hot peppers mixed in, several different varieties of basil (opal, thai, genovese), a bunch of triple-curled parsley, amaranth greens, rainbow chard, the last of the cucumbers (pickling and lemon), summer squashes,  italian plums, some string beans and hazelnuts (disclaimer: I have no idea about these). Some of you might have received yellow and red beets, young broccoli, or maybe a few eggs. There’s some lemon verbena thrown in, too… it makes really nice herbal tea.

Special treat for this week are Micah’s own Cinnamon Plums!! Thank you, Micah, for being the ultimate Dirtbox Canner.

I’ll leave you with a picture of the basil harvested this morning….

I used last week’s plums to can some preserves yesterday! My first canning experience ever… Haven’t tried them yet, but am very excited : ) Also, Grim and I are going to use our tomatoes/hot peppers to can some salsa this evening! We’ll try to make a batch big enough to share….
