Yet another work day…

June 9, 2009

Somehow we were able to convince our friends to pitch in for another work day, and I would say it was our best one yet. Not necessarily for what we accomplished in the gardens, although we did accomplish a lot, but more for what we accomplished on the whiffle ball field. Yes, thank you to Belcher and Navigator, whiffle ball has arrived at the farm, and it was the perfect way to wrap up a day of hard work. Eventhough our only option for a field consisted of a sloped space lined with vines, waist-high weeds and rocks, covered with hidden holes and other various landmines, we still had a riotous time with countless great plays. I’d like to make a special shout out to Scout, our visitor from San Diego (who has launched “Dirtbox South” at this home), who was a catching machine and largely responsible for our team’s ultimate win…

But back to business… there was actually work done on Sunday. Here is a re-cap:

– Jon began the “beautification” of the courtyard in the middle of our main growing space; he is using reclaimed tiles to create a spiral design in the mulch (pictures to follow soon)

– Scout and Thomas installed an amazing trellis system for our growing tomato plants; the trellis is decorated with solar paper lanterns, adding a touch of style to the landscape

– Nadine created a new bed lining the cement retaining wall in the driveway, planting it with beans that will crawl up her handmade trellis and add a bit of beauty to the otherwise dull wall

– Christian and Rob lined the herb bed with rocks from the vineyard… very tough manly men hauling rocks all afternoon for us!

– Chloe planted various flowers into the upper beds – donated from Rob’s mom for the upcoming wedding!

– Vanessa created a lovely cucumber patch in the spot where our trucked in dirt mound used to stand

– And Sharon treated us all with a homemade “death by chocolate” cake covered in strawberries to wrap up the day… and guitar playing and hot tubbing ensued!

As always, here are pictures from the day (click on the photo for the slideshow), courtesy of Sharon (you’ll note that most of the pictures are not of the work that was done, but rather the shenanigans that took place):

The farm you guys have started is absolutely amazing! I’ll be checking back throughout the summer before I leave for college and hopefully come out for more workdays.
